Structural Design and Fabrication of Stretchable Mini-LED Array
Flexible LED arrays are getting attention from industry as well as academia. Besides for flexible displays, flexible LED arrays can be used in implantable devices along with other technologies like photoactive materials and optogenetics. Poor stretchability of common flexible substrates, such as polyimide (PI), limits the biomedical application of flexible LED arrays. Moreover, current stretchable materials can not tolerate high power from miniLEDs.
In this project, the aim is to design a spring-like meandering structure to realize a stretchable mini-LED array based on a PI substrate.
Assignment
The student will perform this assignment at ECTM:
- Duration: ~6 months
- Location: EKL facilities.
Activities:
- Design the stretchable substrate with CAD and CAE software (e.g. SolidWorks).
- Simulate and verify the functionality of the design with finite-element analysis (e.g. COMSOL).
- Fabricate the verified design and characterize the reliability using resistance and/or SEM.
- Test the design with actual components (e.g. miniLEDs), eventually in real animals.
Requirements
You are an ambitious master student looking for an opportunity to practice design of flexible electronics.
You are welcome if you are interested in micro fabrication. Skills or experiences in circuit design, encapsulation, 3D modeling, and simulation could be a plus in this project.
Good communication skill and a pro-active attitude are expected.
